Tree Guards & Fencing

Individual guard protection against rabbit and deer is essential. Livestock grazing amongst the cricket bat willow trees is possible but the trees must be safeguarded against potential damage. The most effective way to do this is to fence off the plantation from livestock for the first 7 years.

What do continental tree guards protect against? We supply continental tree guards at no extra cost with every tree we plant. These guards are designed to deter rabbits and small mammals, but they won't stop a determined deer. If deer are a concern, we offer metal deer guards for £15+VAT.

Tree guards should be perforated to allow proper air circulation and prevent water build up, which can lead to damp rot and microbial growth. Additionally, they should have a smooth surface to discourage deer from rubbing or fraying the trees.

Can I graze sheep and cattle? For the first 7 years of growth, when the Set is still vulnerable, it is recommended to keep sheep and, especially, cattle away from the plantation. Sheep can graze occasionally if there is sufficient forage available, but if grass growth is slow, they must be removed from the field to prevent them from eating the trees. Sheep can also cause damage by scratching or pushing over the Sets. While it’s possible to use metal deer guards or other materials to protect individual trees, the most cost-effective and practical solution is to fence off the entire plantation, either with wood or electric fencing. This approach also allows for ease of access for maintenance and tree felling, as opposed to protecting each tree individually.

If you wish to continue grazing cattle, one option is to install rows of electric fencing around each tree row, allowing cattle to graze between the rows. The 10-meter spacing between the trees makes this possible.

Are tree guards harmful to the environment, and should I remove broken guards? Deer guards are reusable, and we remove them after 7 years for recycling. Continental tree guards are made of plastic, which is not ideal for the environment. When we notice that a guard is splitting, we will remove and dispose of it properly.
